Superhero Week

This is one of our favorite weeks!  Check out some of the fun we had!

The kids LOVED learning how to fly....
Each child brought an old t-shirt from home that we used to make capes.
They were welcome to dress up as superheroes all week if they wanted.
I had some little boys that were more than happy to wear their Halloween costumes again!
We discussed the character traits of superheroes and ways we could have those same traits everyday.

We also learned about some superhero's weaknesses.
We were very careful not to touch the "kryptonite" as we had races to fill our buckets.
We used our wrist shields to protect ourselves from the Bubbles of Doom!
Our superhero boots came in helpful too!
Who says Venn Diagrams are only for big kids!
We found things that were the same and different between Superman and Spiderman.
We learned about the "super power" of static electricity.
Rub a balloon on the carpet then hold it just above a plate of salt.
The salt jumps up and clings onto the balloon!
Some were curious what else they could get the balloon to stick to.
Then they found the air vent! Amazing fun!

Magnets were another fun "super power" to explore.

The girls loved it just as much as the boys!
So did we!

Building Scarecrows

We built REAL scarecrows this week!
Such a great opportunity for children to experience teamwork and accomplishment.
 It was so much fun!

I had planned to attach them to poles and stand them up outside our classroom
window but mother nature gave us rain instead.
Plan B..... Lawn chairs in our classroom!

The kids were so excited that we brought them inside.
This little one decided to teach them to count with some flash cards.
The rain finally stopped and we had a sunny ending to our week.  We took the scarecrows, which now have names "Scarecrow and Cha-nae-nae", outside to enjoy the day.  We decided to take some corn from the sensory table out to share with the crows.

This led to an unexpected science experiment.
"Are crows really scared of scarecrows?"
The students made their predictions.
And then we waited.....

We didn't see anything today.
We are going to keep an eye on them next week.  I'll let you know if we have any visitors!

This Week in Pre-K...."Bats"

This week we will be learning about bats!
The kids are naturally interested in these spooky creatures this time of year.  By the end of the week, they will have learned just how useful these little creatures are to us. I created a new product to add to my science and math centers this week. It focuses on teaching the differences between bats and birds, bat themed counting and number recognition, and other nocturnal animals. Look for it in my TpT store.

Thanks Deedee!

Here is some of the fun we had today...

Christopher Columbus Art!

Bat vs. Bird
We had a great discussion while playing this as a class about the differences between bats and birds.  Tomorrow this will be open as an independent center.

Have a great week!

Roly Polies

I can't believe I have never seen this before!  One of my former students caught a roly poly and brought it to my class to show me.  At first I thought, oh a roly poly......nothing too exciting.
 Then I saw it!!!!
Teeny tiny roly poly babies!  Apparently roly poly mommies carry their eggs in a pouch.  After the babies hatch, they stay in the pouch for several days before leaving to explore their new world.
  I love unexpected moments!!!

Going underground!
The kids loved playing with our tub of plastic insects underground.  They built tunnels and houses with the blocks for the insects as well as pretending to be insects themselves!

This is the beginning of the insect mural the kids are creating.  I am out today and tomorrow for meetings.
I can't wait to see how it turned out when I get back Friday!

Check out these patterns!  We have only practiced AB patterns.
They came up with AABB and ABB on their own!

They had fun counting and matching numbers this week.
Bugs are awesome!

This Week in Pre-K..."Insects and Spiders"

With all the creepy crawlies moving about, this is the perfect time of year to teach the kids about insects and spiders.  The weather here has finally started getting cooler.  This makes it easy to find spiders and other insects to catch in jars for the kids to observe for a day or two.  I just finished a fun product for this week to add to my math, literacy and science centers.  I  can't wait to see what kind of critters we can find this week!

This Week in Pre K.... " My Five Senses"

I'm really excited about this week!
Kids always love learning about the five senses.  Why wouldn't they, such  a fun and messy week!
I also love teaching it because I get to teach them about others that are visually and hearing impaired.  Teach them young to be compassionate towards others and show them how amazing people with disabilities are.  We are going to learn some sign language and feel braille this week!
I just finished a project especially for this week. You can find it in my TpT store.

How tall was a T-Rex?

We ended dinosaur week with everyone's favorite.....The Tyrannosaurus Rex!!!
I asked the students how tall a t-rex was.
Awesome problem solving and creative thinking!

I had a pre-measured piece of yarn in my hand. (20 Feet long)
I asked the students if he was as tall as me.
(holding the yarn even with the top of my head, letting the extra yarn drag the ground)
Students: "NO, taller!"

So I climbed onto a shelf and held the yarn to the ceiling.
Me: "Was a t-rex this tall?"
Students: "NO, taller!"

We then went outside.
Me: "Where could I go to get taller?"
Students: "Stand on the slide."
Me: "Is this how tall a t-rex was?"
Students: "No, taller!"

Me: "Where can I go to get taller?"
Students: "Get on the roof!"
Me: "Ohhh, good idea!"
Up I went!
Me: "Is this how tall a t-rex was?"
Students: "YES!!"

We also stomped like a t-rex to the beat of a drum! Great activity for "fast and slow".
