Weighing Chicks

We have been exploring the concept of "heaviest" and "lightest" this week with a balance scale. Today we learned that 2 chicks are "heavier" than 1 chick. The students loved using the chicks for math. (Not sure if the chicks enjoyed it)

What's inside an egg?

Today we labeled the parts of an egg and took a closer look to find out what is inside an egg. The students came up with great describing words.

Cracking an egg is not as easy as it looks!

How does it feel?  Great sensory experience for some of my kiddos.

Out popped a ...

This week we are hatching chicks in our classroom. Today we stopped and ran to watch two little ones hatch out. This inspired a writing activity for the day. I gave the students the following prompt, "The other day, I gave a shout when an egg cracked open ...". We walked around the room and pretended to find eggs (shouts included). When the students decided what they wanted to "pop out of their eggs" they sat down and wrote about it. Here is one of them.

Dirt vs Sand

Last week, we made predictions to the question "Will seeds grow in dirt or sand?". Today the students were so excited to discover that ALL of their predictions were correct!
